Yá'át'ééh! Shí éí Natalya Nez yinishyé. My name is Natalya Nez and I am the artist behind T∤'ohchiní Studio (translated to English as Wild Onion Studio) a home studio based in New Mexico. I have been an artist all my life but in 2023 I made the jump to make it a career. In the past few years of this new career I have been given the opportunity to do so many incredible things such as teach art workshops, give artist talks and demonstrations, join group shows and public art projects, curating my own solo shows, illustrating for different publications, and sell my work at various art markets around the Four Corners.
Before I began my art career I worked for a local arts council for nearly six years, progressing from Gallery Assistant to Project Coordinator. While there I helped create and facilitate public art projects and workshops, managed an art gallery, acted as the in-house graphic designer, and assisted in curating innovative art shows for the public.
My work is inspired by Diné Bikéyah (Navajo Land), and the beauty of the simplistic moments found in the everyday. I use art as a way to navigate my place and meaning in the world by combining self-reflection, place history, cultural knowledge, and environment through abstraction and realism. I love capturing moments and memories through my art using different medias and techniques like watercolor, acrylic, oil, paper collage, block printing, gel monotypes, digital design, photography, cyanotypes, and screen printing.
